Monetization Rules on YouTube: YouTube Partner Program and more

Maria Ruocco

Content creators who use YouTube as a platform to share their content are encouraged to produce more and more content and publish consistently through monetization.

In this article, we will explore the new monetization requirements, the benefits for small creators, and how to make the most of this opportunity to monetize your YouTube channel.

YouTube Partner Program

In order to monetize a YouTube video, the first step is to become a member of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

To do this, you must have a Google AdSense account because this will allow YouTube to analyze the revenue generated from views that are then subsequently distributed between the content creator (55%) and YouTube (45%).

To earn through fan funding (SuperChats, SuperThanksgivings, channel membership, etc.) there are minimum requirements to join YPP: Specifically you need:

  • Reach 500 subscribers

  • Three public uploads in the last 90 days

  • 3,000 hours of public viewing in the previous 12 months or 3 million public views of YouTube Shorts in the past 90 days.

To earn with video advertising more stringent requirements are required as you need:

  • Reach 1,000 subscribers

  • 4,000 hours of public viewing in a 12-month period or 10 million public YouTube Shorts views in a 90-day period.

How to join the program

In order to have access to the full features of the program, you must apply in the "earnings" section of YouTube Studio.

The application should be accepted in a short time.

Should it be rejected, you can appeal the decision within 21 days.
After 30 days, one can then reapply to enter the program.

Should the application be breathed again, you will still have 21 days to appeal the decision but will have to wait 90 days to apply one more time.

How to switch to video monetization

To activate YouTube monetization, you will simply need to follow the steps below:

  1. Open YouTube Studio

  2. Go to "Content" in the left navigation bar

  3. Select the video you want to monetize

  4. Select "Monetization" in the left menu

  5. Choose

YouTube will show you videos that cannot be monetized due to violations present in the content such as copyright infringement, rights-violating images, or words offensive to decency and human dignity.

When recording the video, therefore, be careful not to include any voices, sounds or images that might prevent the video from being monetize.

Types of ads on YouTube

After activating monetization, different types of ads may be displayed while playing your videos or next to them.

  1. Ignorable video ads
    Ignoreable video announcements can be skipped by viewers after 5 seconds.

  2. Video announcements that cannot be ignored
    Non-ignored video ads must be watched in full before the video can be viewed.

  3. Bumper ads
    Short non-ignoreable video ads, lasting up to 6 seconds, which must be watched in full before the video can be viewed. Bumper ads are activated when ignorable or non-ignoreable ads are activated.nnunci bumper

Other forms of monetization

YouTube Affiliate Marketing

Monetization on YouTube can come not only from selling the product itself, but also from sharing a sales link for that product or service. The moment a user clicks on the link and makes a purchase, you get a commission on the purchase.

Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Sign up for the affiliate programs on the various platforms (f.i., Amazon);

  2. Try to collect a series of links in order to diversify the proposals to submit to the people who will watch your videos and thus increase the probability of buying;

  3. Remember to advertise the link in each video and reference it well in the video description.

Collaborations, sponsorship and deal with brands

Surely you have seen some videos of your favorite Youtuber who sponsors a product or service of one or more brands.

Well yes! Making deals with sponsors can be one of the quickest and fastest ways to monetize your channel.

In order to collaborate with individual brands, it is not necessary to meet minimum requirements. It is possible to collaborate from day 1.

Obviously it is necessary to be able to attract the attention of brands that want to appear in your channel for industry affinity or simply because you do your job very well and are able to influence a significant number of people.

Live streaming to YouTube

An additional form of monetization comes from live streams.

During live streaming it is in fact possible:

  • insert advertisements;

  • insert Super Chats ("donations" or "tips" ranging from $1 to $500 that viewers send to creators during a live stream).

YouTube Shorts

Shorts creators can also sign up for the YouTube Partner Program and start earning ad revenue.

Again, there are requirements:

  • 1,000 subscribers and 10 million eligible public views of shorts in the past 90 days; or alternatively

  • 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of valid public viewing of long-format videos.

The monetization mechanism of a short depends on a number of variables including:

  1. Number of audio tracks used;

  2. Number of views;

  3. Geographical area of reference.

YouTube Channel Membership

The retention of your subscribers could represent the front of an additional profit. In fact, it is possible to create content that can only be viewed by subscribers who have paid for a subscription.

If you want to make a series of content on your channel accessible for a fee, it is important to clarify what type of content you will make available to your paying audience (for example: private live streams, exclusive videos, visual content, graphics, slides, etc.)

YouTube Super thanks

If you have an extremely loyal audience, you can surely use a fairly recent monetization tool like the Super Thanks feature, which allows viewers to purchase digital products, such as stickers or animated GIFs, to show their appreciation for your content.

Here are some of the features you can use on YouTube to monetize your content. Remember that you can use Editby to create your content faster.
